Steps To Making Homemade Bread With Breadmaker

Ok, I promised I would put up the steps to making plain white bread with my bread maker. Here it is:

This is what the whole unit looks like.

It comes with a measuring cup and measuring spoon. You just take the bread pan out to put all the ingredients in.

First to go in is 1 1/3 cups of water and 1 tbsp of vegetable oil.

Next is 1 tsp salt, 3 1/3 cups of bread flour, 1 tsp sugar and top it off with 2 tsp of yeast.

Put the bread pan back into the bread maker.

These are all the buttons for different selections. The first button on the right is for you to select the bread's crust color: Light, Medium, Dark. This time round I chose to make a "light" crust. Next is "menu". By default it is set to "basic" setting which is what you use for plain white bread. Other settings are like "french bread", "wholewheat bread" etc.... You have 12 settings. If you want to make buns or pizza dough, you can have the bread maker knead the dough for you and then you put the dough in the oven.
You can also set the timer on. For example, you can put all the ingredients in the night before and have the bread ready in the morning. So, let's say you put all the stuff in at 10pm and you want to eat it at 7am. You just set the timer to 9 hours. Once your press the start button, you can see the timer counting down.

There is a window at the top so you can see what is happening.

Simple white bread will take 3 hours to be ready. The bread maker will beep to let you know it's done. Then it will keep the bread warm another 60 minutes if you don't take it out yet. Oh, forgot to mention that the machine will beep at 2 different times. The first time is to let you know that you can add extra ingredients if you want such as nuts or whatever you fancy. So, don't panic if you hear it beep the first time and see that it's not ready yet :)

Okay, so here is the finished product: nice warm bread. You take the bread pan out and let it cool down for like 5 minutes. Then you turn it upside down to "dunk" the bread out to cool on a rack. If you leave it inside the bread pan or on the table, the bottom will be wet from the steam. So remember, you have to let the bread cool on a cooling rack.

Ok gals, hope that is what you were looking for. Very simple.

  5. Hi Anonymous:
Just wondering, what kind of flour did you use?

  6. Hi Lian,

i used HR white bread & wholewheat flour which i bought from the baking shop. Both breads turned out heavy (everything seems like sink to the bottom) & they did not rise! It only reached ½ of the breadpan.

  7. Sorry, I'm not familiar with "HR white bread" flour. Anyway, according to the breadmaker's user guide, if your bread does not rise, it could be the following:
    - too little yeast or wrong yeast
    - damp or out of date yeast
    - yeast in contact with salt
    - water too warm
    - wrong type of flour
    -damp, out of date flour

Maybe you could change the flour or yeast. The flour I use is labeled as "bread flour". Sometimes the shop labels it as high protein flour too.

Give it another try and let me know how it goes. I've been happily using the breadmaker to make bread and dough. No problems on my side.

  8. ok...if according to your steps, after the water & oil, the salt will go directly into the liquid right? Previously my sequence was water, oil, flour, sugar(spread all over the flour), salt placed at the 4 corners of the breadpan & lastly yeast in the center. Is that the reason why it did not work?

Will definitely give it a try again this weekend & let u know on the outcome! Tks for ur feedback & advice. I'm really looking forward to bake the bread successfully!

  9. The yeast feeds on the sugar. That's why you pile the sugar in the center and then the yeast on top of it. Yeah, maybe by putting the salt before putting the flour, you will have better success. All the best.

  13. Hi Shirleen,
Maybe you can go back to Tesco and let them know of the missing manual. If not, you can google for "BM07 Breadmaker" user guide.
I found a place where you can download it:

  17. Thanks Lian, I just bought the same bread maker and successfuly made it based on your instructions, thanks! Have you try the "JAM" and "CAKE" functions as in the user guide page 5? I tried to follow the instructions but it is too brief. Can you share with us your success experiences if you have tried it, thanks :)

  19. Hi Lian,
Kareen here. Nice to meet u.
I just bought the Tesco breadmaker last two days but not yet start using it...
Before using it, got something not so clear..
    Need ask for ur help..
First we put water, oil, salt, then follow with flour, how about sugar?? Put before flour or after flour?? Thanks..

  20. Hi Kareen,
The sugar is on top of the flour. Then you put the yeast on top of the sugar because the yeast will feed on the sugar. Good luck and hope you have yummy bread to eat.

  21. Hi Lian,
    Kareen here again.
    Thanks for ur reply.
Well, I follow your steps and recipe and set the crust "light", time 3hours...
But wonder that why as result my bread come out like stone?? Am I make wrongly something else??

  22. Hi Kareen,
It is difficult for me to say. I'm not an expert but I would guess it could be the yeast or the flour you're using. If you're using wholemeal flour, don't put in too much as that would make the bread very heavy. Hope you find the solution.
