9 Questions Tag

Okay, this tag is to show Family First that I can write fun posts too :)

1. Have you ever been on TV?
Yes. It happened during my golfing days. Usually it would be during the sports news. They would either show me playing or it would be a short interview. I was also invited to be a guest on a children's game show. Can't remember the name of the program now. It was really a crazy thing. I was on the golf course playing a round when someone from the National Sports Council (MSN) called to tell me I was supposed to be at the studio for the recording. So, I had to quit my game half-way and rush over to the recording studio. There I was all sweaty and I had to change into a pair of track suit they gave me (which probably made me look fat and ugly). What was my job? Lead the kids in a short stretching session for them to warm up for their game. And then, as they played, I had to cheer them on. Felt a bit stupid as I would just stand around and yell "cepat, cepat adik" or "laju, laju lagi" (translation = faster, faster). I was actually very embarrassed about the whole thing and didn't tell anyone. But still some of my friends with young kids watched the program and informed me that they saw me (*blush).

2. Have you ever sung in public?
Does karaoke count? Hehehe. But I guess I will say yes to this question as I was part of the school choir in primary school. We sang during concerts and also for competition. Public is involved in that right?

3. Have you ever dyed your hair blond?
If I had continued to play golf under the hot, hot sun, I think I would be blond now. But no, I never dyed my hair blond. It's damaged enough.

4. Have you ever eaten frogs' legs?
I think so, I can't remember. If I did, it was a very, very, very long time ago.

5. Have you ever received a present that you really hated?
No. Don't get many presents (sob, sob) so I appreciate what I get. It may not be what I want, but I won't hate it.

6. Have you ever walked into a lamp post?
If I did, it probably caused some amnesia that I don't remember it.

7. Have you ever cooked a meal by yourself for more than 15 people?
I've cooked a meal by myself but not for 15 people.

8. Have you ever fallen or stumbled in front of others?
I'm sure I have. But no big deal that it would stand out as something memorable.

9. Have you ever done volunteer work?
Yes. A few years back I would visit the pediatric ward once a week to help out an NGO do some children's activity for children with cancer. I stopped when I got preggy with no.2. Also after the devastating tsunami, DH and me volunteered half a day at the buddhist temple to pack stuff that people had donated.

So, who shall I tag now? Who needs to have a some fun injected into their blog?
1. Health Freak Mommy
2. Min
3. J@n!ce
4. Footyman
5. Mumsgather

A Frugal Lifestyle

With the cost of living going up, up, up, the call has been made to change our lifestyle to one that is more frugal. So, what kind of changes can be made? Well, that is the point of this tag. Mumsgather wants to know, but I think this tag originated from Cuddly Family. She too has specifically called out my name to participate.

Well, truthfully, my frugal lifestyle started like 2 years ago.
  • Moved away from the city where the rent is cheaper but the house don't get smaller.
  • Work from home. Don't need to travel unnecessarily. We try not to go out more than 2x a week.
  • Home-preschooling. Kindergarten these days are just wayyyyy to expensive.
  • Not signing up kids for 101 tuition and activities. No need to pay extra fees and no need to chauffeur them all over the place. There's plenty they can learn at home (if you take the time to teach them.) Try not to be overly "kiasu."
  • Shop and pay bills over the internet.
  • Switched to modern cloth diapers.
  • Eat at home. I get to practice my cooking skills too.
  • Cultivate a garden that is edible. We have 4-5 papaya trees, 2 banana trees and many mulberry trees. Plenty of herbs to make "leong char" (cooling drink). 3 neem trees to help in cleansing blood (but only FIL and DH drinks it. Urgh! Too bitter for me). Vegetables not so much these days, but we used to have long beans, brinjal, ladies fingers, chillies and bok choy. Tomato is difficult to plant. Even if you've cemented up your entire porch, you can plant some of these in pots. It's time to switch from being a consumer to being a producer!
  • Air conditioner in the room conked out long ago. We didn't bother to replace it and just use fan. The only other room with air conditioner is DH's office. That one we use only when really "beh tahan" (going to die from the heat).
  • Get an energy saving plug to reduce electricity bill.
  • Turn off main switches for tv, radio and all electrical appliances when not using. Don't just leave them on stand-by mode.
  • No more using condense milk for making milo. Switched to using powdered milk. Actually, we also don't buy milo anymore. Not since they raised the price. Not only expensive but somehow the chocolate also taste like it's been watered down. We've been drinking Tesco's house brand "ChocoMalt" and it's okay.
  • Make sure kids always carry their water bottle when we go out. That way don't have to buy drinks whenever they are thirsty. I also switched to steel water bottles. No more worry about plastic poisoning. They also last longer. The plastic ones always end up leaking or broken.
What more can I do to be frugal? Err... hate to admit it but there needs to be less consumption of junk food in my house. I believe I'm the biggest culprit (*face going red*). Apart from that, I think I'm already very frugal.

Okay, now to pass the "how would you change your lifestyle" baton to:

Nice Award

This nice award was presented to me by a nice person: Peridot&Sapphire. She says she is my silent reader. Thanks for not being silent this time. Heheheh.

So, what am I exactly awarded for?
The originator of the Nice Matters Award states that it is meant for “those that are just nice people, good blog friends, and those that inspire good feelings and inspiration! Those that care about others, that are there to lend support, or those that are just a positive influence in our blogging world!”

Wah, so nice to have people view my blog that way. That is certainly my goal anyway. So, to pass this on, I will have to nominate 7 people. I see many people already have this award. If you are awarded 2nd or 3rd time, nevermind-lah hor. Just means you are doubly and triply nice :)

1. Scribbles for My Angels
2. Jenn
3. Min
4. J@n!ce
5. Joy
6. Jean's Diary
7. Singapore Girl

Addition (24 September 2007)
I'm also giving this award to Ken because he so "nicely" hinted that he'd love to receive it one day. Those lovely pictures of you children curled up in bed do inspire me to curl up in mine :)

Tag Time Again

Time to once more catch up on my tags.

J@n!ce tagged me on 10 random things about MY MUM.
Here it goes:

1. My mom joined a beauty pageant when she was a teenager (I think, not sure how old, or rather young she was), and got third place. That picture is somewhere in the photo album.
2. My mom still plays golf in the mornings and sometimes, line dancing after. Yes, still very active. Not sure if it's polite to tell you her age but here's a hint, she is born in the year of the snake.
3. She used to play badminton for the Tunku Ampuan of Negeri Sembilan team. I remember going with her on a badminton tourney trip to Terengganu. They had chartered a bus and we were suppose to stop to see the turtles at Rantau Panjang but it rained :(
4. My mom is a pro-mahjung player (but she don't like to play the type with jokers). She says she has stopped playing but she's said that many times in this life time. Hahahah. Sure you can stop ah mommy?
5. She don't like western food. She's a "char kway teow-hokkien mee" type of person.
6. She was a primary school teacher. I know she taught English and music. Not sure if she taught any other subjects. I asked her just the other night if she had taught me how to read. She said "no". Apalah Mommy, you are an English teacher but never teach me how to read? Hahahah.
7. She has a D24 durian tree that has been fruiting very nice durians the last few years. All her neighbours and friends benefit from her generosity. Including me lah :)
8. As a baby, she was given away to her aunt as there were a lot of girls already in the family. So her aunt became her mother and her mother became her aunt. Aiyoh, pening kepala when we visit relatives from her side. We are always asking "real relative or not real (as in adopted) relative"?
9. She can play the piano without notes. She taught her ownself how to play and plays by ear.
10. She loves gardening. Her garden is full of flowers.

I tag:
1. Mom2Ashley
2. Mia Bambina
3. Tracy

---------------------------------------------------------------------

BUT the one thing I think would be kewl to do is to open a dinosaur themed restaurant with a not-to-be-missed gigantic play area. YEAH! If anybody actually do this ah, better pay me some sort of fees okay. I'm gonna copyright this idea. Come to think of it... I think $1000000 is not enough leh.

I tag:
1. Faye
2. Lyanne
3. KarenYiau
4. Mommy of 2 Angels

SAHM or FTWM tag

I was tagged by The New Parent on whether I would choose to be a SAHM (Stay-at-home-mom) or FTWM (Full-time-working-mom). Let me include the rules to this tag first.

Here are the rules:
1. If you are given a choice, SAHM or FTWM? Give at least 3 reasons.
2. Include your name in the thread below.
3. Tag 3 other people.

List:
1. Immomsdaughter prefers to be a SAHM
2. Miche prefers to be a SAHM.
3. Msau prefers to be a PTWM.
4. Everydayhealy prefers to be a SAHM.
5. Jazzmint prefers FTWM.
6. Cheryl prefers to be a FTWM but will consider SAHM.
7. Mom of Cairo prefers to be a PTWM.
8. The New Parent is a WSMWTMC (but would like to be a PTWD).
9. Lian choose to be a SAHM

My choice would be... SAHM
And that is what I am now. Why?
1. Don't have to go crazy fighting traffic jams everyday.

2. Don't have to go hunting for the right babysitter/daycare and then worrying if they are okay, or if they are exposed to negative influences, or if they are getting the right kind of stimulation, or if they are being disciplined the right way, or if they being instilled with the right kind of values. By staying at home with my kids, I take full responsibility on how they grow up. In this crazy world today, it is vital for mothers to be in the home.

3. Still referring to babysitter/daycare, I think it puts a damper on how many children you can have. If you have one, it's still okay on your pocket. If you start to have 2 or 3, then it starts to get expensive. By staying at home, I don't have to limit the number of children I have according to how much I can pay a babysitter/daycare. Also, kindergarten is expensive. By staying at home, I can homeschool my kids. Kindergarten level -- I can still handle. Teaching calculas -- maybe I'll think twice :)
What I'm saying is, by choosing to be a SAHM, my choice of how many children I want to have is not influenced by money issue. I believe having children don't have to be expensive. It only gets expensive if you make it so and choose all the "must-haves". Some of you may think, "wah, it must be crazy with 3 kids now." Actually, let me tell you, it's not so bad la. You might not think you can handle it, but when the situation presents itself, YOU CAN. Of course this doesn't mean I'm planning to have 8 kids!!! Hehehehe.

Being a SAHM is definitely an adjustment. Plus, it depends on your attitude and what you value in life. For me, I want my children to know that anytime they come home and yell "Mom?", they will get an answer "Yes, what do you want?" Children need that kind of security. As long as I am able to give that to them, I will.

Of course, if you really need to earn a little extra cash, there is the option of being a WAHM (Work at Home Mom). That's why I have my little bookshop. So, come and support me okay?

Now this tag is passed onto:
1. Big Pumpkin (because I love your writing)
2. Hui Sia
3. Health Freak Mommy

Tag Time

Okay, it's time to catch up on my tags. I have been tagged by Miranda, Big Pumpkin and J@n!ce to do 8 random facts about myself. Actually, J@n!ce's tag says 7 things but nevermind-lah. 8 facts it shall be.

The Rules:
  • I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
  • Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
  • People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
  • At the end of your blog, you need to choose people to get tagged and list their names.
  • Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
Okay, let the tag begin:
  1. I got my golf handicap when I was 11 and started to play competitive golf thereafter. I won my first state open at the age of 14. It was the Perak Open at Royal Perak Golf Club.
  2. I was honored the title Malaysian Sportswoman of the Year 1992.
  3. I was conferred the award Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by the Yang diPertuan of Negeri Sembilan when he was Agong.
  4. I am the only Malaysian to have won the Malaysian Ladies Open and did it 5 times.
  5. I hate, hate, hate migraines. I get them at least once a month. No it has nothing to do with my menstrual cycle. I get it when it's too hot, when I'm too tired, when there is haze etc....
  6. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some people know us as the Mormons. Getting baptized is one of the best things that I did in my life. I have learned so much from the church: what is this life about, how to be happy, the importance of family, how to be a good parent, how to face trials and tribulations etc....
  7. I love reading good children's books. That's why I started my online bookshop for children and parents.
  8. I love to sleep in and hate waking up early in the morning. I am a night person.
Okay, hope I didn't sound too braggy at the beginning. Just some of my achievements that are kept in the cupboard since becoming a mother. So since the opportunity was presented to me, thought I'd bring them out :)

This tag is now passed on to:

Now on to the next tag. Karen Yiau and Momofcairo gave me Blogivitis. I'm to list 10 symptoms that define me as 'infected'.
  1. I gladly sidetrack into blogging and blog hopping instead of posting up books to sell at my bookshop.
  2. Camera is always ready to take pictures for blogging purposes.
  3. Cannot just post the pictures, but must scrap them first (when time permits). Must add some 'spice' to the blog so people will come back. Everyone enjoys scraps. Plus give me an outlet for some creativity lah.
  4. I use my blog to blackmail my kids -- "I'm going to show all the aunties how naughty you are".
  5. I also use my blog to encourage my kids -- "Wah, so clever. Let me go tell all the aunties how clever you are."
  6. It makes my day to see comments on my posts. Blogivitis makes me crave for more, and more, and more comments. Good comments okay, not spam and hate mail. Don't you agree that your motivation to blog increases when you see more people visiting you.
  7. I know more about my bloggy friends than I do my neighbours.
  8. I eat 2 packets of Tom Yam noodles so I can torture myself with the spicyness (I'm one who can't take very spicy food)... so I can get rid of my headache (and it worked)... so I can finish this post and publish it tonight.
  9. I am sitting here, cracking my head as to what other symptoms of blogivitis I have instead of going to bed (it's now 12:35am) and getting the sleep I need.
  10. AND last of all, I know I have blogivitis when my children asks to use the computer and I tell them NO, with the excuse that mommy has to do work on the computer... when actually it's just blogging.
Okay, now passing this infection to...
That's it for my tags this time.

Food Around The World Tag

I was tagged by Health Freak Mommy to do this food tag. Finally am able to do it as my mom came to visit and I got her to "tapau" this favourite food of mine all the way from Seremban. Now I have a photo to go with the tag.

So, what is it? HAKKA MEE

There are two shops in Seremban that makes this. The owners are related, brothers I believe. One shop is on the upper floor of the market, whereas the other is opposite the post office in front of the market.

The noodles are homemade and so far, I have yet to find it anywhere else. Sorry, it's not halal. The noodles are mixed with a slightly thick sauce with minced pork. It's really yummilicious. I usually order the medium bowl. If really hungry, the large sized bowl.

The shop outside the market cooks the noodles longer. It's still chewy, but not that chewy. Unfortunately, you have to wait longer for your order.

Now, I tag:
1. Min (again, I know you have an eye for good food)
2. Lion City Girl
3. Lyanne
4. Sandra (care to share some fantastic East Malaysian cuisine?)
5. Marsha

Instructions.

Meaning of My Children's Names

I have been tagged by Sandra. Yes, I'm trying to catch up on my tags. Have another food tag but can't do that yet as I have no pictures.

Anyway, regarding my children's names, it was decided that DH would choose the English names and me the chinese names, BUT both had to agree upon the name chosen. So, how did this chinese illiterate choose a chinese name? I just chose what sounds I liked and then checked the dictionary to see if they had good meaning. Hahahah.

Well, below are the meanings of their names. With my boys, their English names have no meanings. DH just came up with them out of the blue. As long as people can't make fun of it, sounds decent and nobody has it, it passed the name selection test.

So now I tag:
Min
Lia
Jesslyn
DrAston
Big Pumpkin

10 Things I Hate About My Hubby Tag

I was tagged by Karen. I have been putting this tag off as I really do not know what to write. There is very little that I hate about my hubby. You can't even call it hate. It's more like mild irritations. We hardly fight. The screaming bouts are more with the kids. But I take this tag as a sign of friendship and appreciate that Karen even thought of me. So I will reciprocate.

1. His bad moods can be brought on by simple things. You don't know when it's going to hit. I guess you could say it's like London weather -- don't know when it's going to change. But it's effects ripples through the whole house and makes everyone want to run away. BUT the children and I have learned that it's best to leave daddy alone during that time. I know he is under a lot of stress to provide for us and people have their bad days. So, it's okay.

2. His super clean disposition. He cannot wait till the children finish their meal before he picks up the crumbs. He does it while they are still eating. So, unintentionally he creates tension in the kids. Poor kids have to quickly learn as babies that they must eating properly.
I grew up in a household where sweeping and mopping was only done like 2x a week. DH insists it should be done everyday. We've compromised and I do it every other day. I'm not a clean freak but he's instilled in me some good habits. So, it's okay.

3. He forgets we are around. He works from home and sometimes, when he comes out of his office, he will walk pass us without saying anything. There is no sign of acknowledgment. It's like we are invisible.
I know that sometimes he zones out when he's thinking a lot. So I take it upon myself to remind him of our existence, or do something to bring him back to earth. So, it's okay.

4. He doesn't let me indulge in too much junk food, sweet drinks and outside food. He's thinking of my health. So, it's okay.

5. He blames the children's light coloured hair on me being out in the sun playing golf when I was pregnant. There's no logic to that. So, it's okay.

6. He never gives me a 10/10 for my cooking. When I ask him how is the dish, he always gives the passing grade of "okay-lah". This is because he thinks he is a better cook than me. Well... I must admit he is. But my cooking not too bad also what. Anyway, he is willing to do the everyday cooking. So, it's okay.

7. He hardly exercises or play sports. I am the sporty kind but have nobody to play with. Mind you, I mean playing sports, not exercising. So, I have to succumb to playing with my children. But how fun is it playing badminton with your 5 and 3 year old? But I know it's because he is working hard now so he can play later. So, it's okay.

8. He hasn't taken me or the children on a vacation... ever. Travelling has only been confined to 'balik kampung' during Chinese New Year. I know financially it is not feasable to go on a vacation now. But when we strike it rich, I'm insisting we go everywhere. It'll be good for the kids too. Till then, it's okay. I can wait.

9. He can't live without his internet connection. Another reason why we don't go on vacations. But it's his livelihood. So, it's okay (for now, but not forever).

10. He lied to me when I was pregnant. He told me the gynae said NOT to eating durians. But I ate anyway. So, it's okay. Muahahahah.

I'm not going to tag anybody. Reason being I don't want to encourage people to focus on their spouse's negatives. BUT if you need to let off steam, consider yourself tagged. It's okay.
